Experiments on the interaction of deuterium with niobium were performe
d at low energies ranging from 5 to 50 eV per deuteron and normal inci
dence. The dependence of the particle reflection coefficient R-N On pr
imary energy was obtained using the thermal desorption technique. It w
as found that a decrease in energy leads to an RN decrease if the ener
gy gets less than 10 eV. This is in qualitative agreement with a compu
ter simulation using the binary collision approximation. (C) 1998 Else
