T. Reinert et al., INVESTIGATION OF THE CALCIUM CONTENT IN JOINT CARTILAGE - IS IT CONNECTED WITH (EARLY ARTHROTIC) CHANGES IN CARTILAGE STRUCTURE, Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research. Section B, Beam interactions with materials and atoms, 138, 1998, pp. 936-940
This paper describes investigations using the Particle induced M-ray E
mission method (PIXE) to evaluate the concentration of Ca together wit
h that of other elements (S, C1, and K) across the articular cartilage
of domestic pigs in order to verify a putative influence of calcium o
n the structural changes in early arthrotic stage, derived from NMR mi
croscopic imaging. The measurements were carried out with focused ion
beams of a lateral resolution down to 20 mu m. The main matrix compone
nts (C, N, O) were evaluated from proton backscattering spectra. (C) 1
