Abstract
PIXE was used to extract the traffic component from the air pollution in Krakow. Aerosol samples were collected using automatic sampling equ ipment at five stations located at different distances from one of the main roads in Krakow. The elemental composition of aerosol samples wa s determined by the PIXE method. The results obtained indicate that th e traffic-derived air pollution in Krakow has two components. The firs t one is directly connected with gasoline combustion. The origin of th e second component is dust mechanically raised by moving cars. (C) 199 8 Elsevier Science B.V.
