A computer simulation method has been used to study small angle correl
ated scattering of low energy ions by a single crystal surface with su
bmonolayer adsorption coverages. It has been shown that a rainbow effe
ct and a chain effect at multiple scattering on adsorbate and substrat
e atoms and inverse ratio of masses of colliding particles lead to the
appearance of additional peaks in angular and energy distributions. A
n analysis of these peaks and of the dynamics of their change upon ads
orption as compared with experiment makes it possible to control the i
nitial stages of adsorption and to identify adsorption structures by m
eans of small angle ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS). (C) 1998 Elsevi
