Abstract
We analyze different schemes of the dispersion management using a vari ational approach developed in our previous works. We demonstrate how t o exploit this variational method to determine in a simple way the ene rgy enhancement of the dispersion-managed soliton, and the optimal poi nt for launching of the signal, as well as how to evaluate characteris tics of a carrier signal for specific system parameters. The variation al method is a useful and effective tool for design and optimization o f dispersion-managed communication systems. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
