''Bioceramic-titanium nickelide'' functional composites are proposed a
nd investigated. It is shown that the incorporation of an alloy (titan
ium nickelide) possessing superelasticity and shape memory enhances th
e strength properties of the composite while the porosity through the
material needed for the ingrowth of living tissue is maintained. These
composites are biocompatible and exhibit a property similar to the su
perelasticity characteristic of living tissue. (C) 1997 American Insti
