The Mexican bean beetle, Epilachna varivestis, was confirmed in legumi
nous vegetable fields in Yamanashi and Nagano Prefectures, central Hon
shu, Japan in the summer of 1997. It was estimated that this species h
ad already colonized these areas about four or five years earlier, and
that the adults can survive the winter there.
