The paper presents comprehensive analysis of statistical properties of
the radiation from self amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) free el
ectron laser operating in linear mode. The investigation has been perf
ormed in a one-dimensional approximation, assuming the electron pulse
length to be much larger than a coherence length of the radiation. The
following statistical properties of the SASE FEL radiation have been
studied: field correlations, distribution of the radiation energy afte
r monochromator installed at the FEL amplifier exit and photoelectric
counting statistics of SASE FEL radiation. It is shown that the radiat
ion from SASE FEL operating in linear regime possesses all the feature
s corresponding to completely chaotic polarized radiation. (C) 1998 El
