Vv. Filatov, EFFECTIVENESS OF THE REPULSION OF ELECTROMAGNETIC COILS WITH STRENGTHAND MAGNETIC-FIELD LIMITATIONS, Technical physics, 42(5), 1997, pp. 569-571
Mechanical power units utilizing electromagnetic interaction between c
oils are generally distinguished by compactness and ease of control. A
coil-repulsion drive configuration is preferable for increasing the e
fficiency of such a device. One of the main limitations in choosing th
e parameters of stressed electromagnetic systems is mechanical strengt
h. The application of superconducting coils has a number of additional
limitations, for example, on the maximum magnetic field strength in t
he cross section of the coils. The problems of optimizing the dimensio
ns of the electromagnetic system of a power unit consisting of two ide
ntical, coaxial, annular coils of rectangular cross section with oppos
ing currents are investigated with allowance for strength and magnetic
field limitations. (C) 1997 American Institute of Physics. [S1063-784
