3-Methyl-2-thiono-4-thiazolidinone and aromatic aldehydes adsorbed on
potassium fluoride on alumina gave under microwave irradiation 5-aryli
dene-3-methyl-2-thiono-4-thiazolidinones in 70% to 90% yield. These co
mpounds can be cleaved with sodium hydroxide on alumina into alpha-thi
olacrylic acids in quasi-quantitative yields. Michael addition of diet
hyl phosphite to 5-arylidene-3-methyl-2-thiono-4-thiazolidinone is des
cribed for the first time.
