A P-31 NMR investigation has been made of the action of (Cl3P ... N ..
. PCl3)+ X- (X = PCl6, Cl) and PCl5 on hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in
n-heptane and benzene at the reflux temperature and at -8-degrees-C. T
he reactions yield cyclic oligomers and linear polymer (NPCl2)n in var
ious amounts. With X = PCl6 or with PCl5 ionic oligomers of general fo
rmula (Cl-(PCl2=N)n-PCl3)+ -X- are also formed. With X = Cl only the l
inear polymer (NPCl2)n and pair cyclic oligomers are present in the re
action products. A mechanism is proposed.
