The monolayer micrographite films, of which the lateral dimensions are
in the order of nanometer, have been grown on TiC(111)-faceted and Ti
C(410) surfaces by chemical vapor deposition. Diffraction spots due to
the graphite lattice have been observed for TiC(111)-faceted surfaces
, but not for (410). Angle-resolved ultraviolet photoelectron spectros
copy (ARUPS) spectra of micrographite on the faceted surface have show
n a series of peaks due to the rr states of graphite. On the (410) sur
face, quantized rr branches of graphite ribbon with the narrow terrace
of 0.886 nm appeared. Any other state characteristics of the microgra
phite, such as edge state near Fermi level, was not observed for both
systems. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
