This paper describes a case of ovariohysterectomy in a mare with a clo
sed pyometra. A possible complication is bacterial contamination of th
e abdominal cavity caused by spillage out of an infected, distended ut
erus. For this reason, drainage and lavage of the uterus before surger
y is of uppermost importance. If drainage of the uterus is not possibl
e on the standing horse due to severe cervical or vaginal adhesions, d
ilatation of the cervix should be attempted under general anesthesia w
ith the horse in dorsal recumbency.
