Abstract
Condensation of phenols and their methyl ethers with aromatics is easi ly carried out in HF-SbF5 or in the presence of aluminum halides (AlCl 3 or AlBr3). The postulated mechanism implies trapping of the diproton ated phenolic moiety by aromatics (benzene, naphthalene, tetrahydroqui noline) or through an intramolecular process.
