In preceding theoretical examinations, the friction welding process of
ceramics to metals was investigated by the finite element method and
statistical fracture mechanics. The influence of residual stresses on
the resulting joint strength was of special interest. It was found tha
t, besides material combination, interface geometry does strongly infl
uence the residual stress distributions and therefore has a strong inf
luence on joint strength. In the framework of this examination, these
theoretical findings have been experimentally verified. Furthermore, t
he influence of surface preparation and welding parameters have been e
xamined.
