Abstract
The accuracies of the border approximation and the cubic polynomial ap proximation are tested for isotropically scattering vertically inhomog eneous atmospheres. Comparisons with exact results show that these app roximations yield about the same accuracies for vertically homogeneous and inhomogeneous atmospheres. It is concluded that these approximati ons work equally well for isotropically and anisotropically scattering inhomogeneous atmospheres with or without polarization.
