R. Gibson et D. Zillmann, EFFECTS OF CITATION IN EXEMPLIFYING TESTIMONY ON ISSUE PERCEPTION, Journalism and mass communication quarterly, 75(1), 1998, pp. 167-176
Two sides of an issue were presented and exemplified with testimonials
in a magazine-style news report. Testimony featured the interviewees'
positions in citation or paraphrase. All combinations of citation-par
aphrase were created and analyzed in factorial designs; i.e., position
A (cited, paraphrased) was crossvaried with position B (cited, paraph
rased). Issue perception was found to be greatly influenced by citatio
n. Respondents adopted the cited position move than the paraphrased po
sition. This effect was most pronounced when the opposing position was
paraphrased No presentation bins was detected, however.
