Heartworm disease in cats should be considered as a differential diagn
osis for cats with sudden signs of respiratory distress caused by pneu
mothorax. A diagnosis of heartworm disease is made on the basis of cli
nical signs, serologic test results for heartworm antigen and antibodi
es, and radiographic and ultrasonographic findings.
