Abstract
The formation of bimetallic Pt/Ag alloy in an amorphous Ag film suppor ted on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite has been investigated with s canning photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy. This spatiall y resolved study reveals that alloying strongly depends on the morphol ogy of the deposited metal. Whereas little metal intermixing is found in small Ag clusters (50 Angstrom), efficient alloying is observed in much larger heterogeneous structures. Subsequent annealing results in a decrease of the exposed alloy component, due to segregation of the t wo metal species. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
