The effect of such chain ''defects'' as incomplete cycle formation or
nonplanar character of the naphthoylenimide cycle on the conformationa
l rigidity of the polynaphthoylenimide chains was studied using polyna
phthoylenimidoquinazoline as an example. It was shown by quantum-chemi
cal and conformational analyses that incomplete cycle formation in pol
ynaphthoylenimides exerts almost no effect on the rigidity of the poly
mer chain. At the same time, the experimental values of the conformati
onal rigidity can be explained assuming that the chain consists of 10-
15% units containing the naphthoylenimide cycle in the boat conformati
on.
