New aromatic diamines containing phenoxide substituents-derivatives of
2,4,6-trinitrotoluene-were synthesized. The reaction of these diamine
s with aromatic tetracarboxylic dianhydrides yielded phenoxy-substitut
ed polyimides. The effect of the structure of the synthesized polymers
on their major characteristics was studied. It was found that all pol
yimides, especially polyimides based on dianhydrides containing hinge
groups, show large differences between the glass transition and degrad
ation temperatures, whereas high thermal stability of these polymers r
emains invariable. The majority of polymers are well soluble in organi
c solvents.
