As a follow-on measure to the adoption of a new process automation sys
tem for the hot strip mill of Preussag Stahl AG, the strip cooling sec
tion has also been modernised. The objective has been to install a new
process optimisation and control system by which coiling temperatures
can be achieved within close tolerances (+15 K) and differences in th
e speed and finishing temperature levels largely compensated for over
the length of the strip. For this purpose a mathematical/physical cool
ing model optimised on the basis of measured values has been developed
as a means of feedforward control.
