Workers representing Stenamma carolinense were recently collected in t
he Florida panhandle, the first recorded collection since 1937. Worker
s representing Stenamma foveolocephalum were subsequently collected in
Mississippi, the first recorded collection since 1930. Additional spe
cimens were collected in Alabama. After examining this material and co
mparing it with known types, we synonymize S. carolinense with S. fove
olocephalum. Apparently this taxon is active near the surface only dur
ing winter months which may explain why this ant has not been encounte
red for over 50 years.
