A three dimensional mathematical model for fluid flow in the mold of t
he soft contact EMC (Electro-Magnetic Casting) with the bifurcated SEN
(Submerged Entry Nozzle) was developed. FEM (Finite Element Method) f
or the calculation of electromagnetic field and FVM (Finite Volume Met
hod) with BFC (Body Fitted Coordinate) for the fluid flow considering
the complex geometry of the electromagnetic mold and the irregular men
iscus shape of the melt were used. This mathematical model was applied
to an experimental EMC process with 200 mm x 500 mm rectangular cold
crucible type mold and the tin melts as the slab. In this study, a mat
hematical model which can analyze the EMC system was developed and a c
haracteristic three dimensional electromagnetic phenomena and fluid fl
ow of slab EMC with the bifurcated SEN were investigated. Several typi
cal phenomena such as the concentration of electromagnetic force on th
e surface of the molten metal, the increase of flow velocity on the me
niscus were found.
