Catalytic hydration of 2-methyl-2-propene to tert-butanol (TBA) and al
kylation with methanol to methyl-tert-butyl et:her (MTBE) with dodecat
ungstosilicic acid H4SiW12O40 as catalyst were investigated in a const
ant flow reactor at 40-80 degrees C. The catalyst is active in both re
actions and exhibits high selectivities. The mechanisms of both reacti
ons involving protonated intermediates were proposed. (C) Academie des
