An investigation has been made of the interaction of carbon and hydrog
en on Ru-V/Al2O3 catalysts. A combination of physicochemical and quant
um-chemical methods has been used to study the relationship between th
e composition of the surface of Ru-V/Al2O3 catalysts and their adsorpt
ion and catalytic properties. It was established that ruthenium and va
nadium interact on the surface of the support with the formation of cl
uster structures. The activity and selectivity of the catalysts in Fis
cher-Tropsch synthesis depend on the nature of the surface clusters. Q
uantum-chemical methods have been used to examine the mechanism of act
ivation of CO and hydrogen. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights
