The ability to synthesize gamma-linolenic acid and carotenoids was stu
died in 42 strains of fungi mucorales belonging to 22 species of the g
enera Mucor and Rhizopus. The highest yield of gamma-linolenic acid wa
s found in fungi of the species Mucor circinelloides (from 20 to 31 mg
/g of absolutely dry biomass). The highest yield of carotenoids was fo
und in fungi of the species Mucor hiemalis (from 3.6 to 8.2 mg/g of li
pids).
