The bremsstrahlung process in the domain of strong Coulomb fields has
been investigated for N-2 and Ar target electrons colliding with He-li
ke uranium ions at 223 MeV/u. The differential cross sections for brem
sstrahlung were measured at laboratory observation angles of 48 degree
s, 90 degrees, and 132 degrees. Substantial discrepancies were found b
etween the experimental cross sections and the first-order Born approx
imation calculations. The reported data provide a new testing ground f
or non-perturbative treatment of the coupling between radiation and ma
tter in the presence of strong fields.
