1,2-Di-n-butylhydrazine in hexane solution has been oxidized to azo-n-
butane with oxygen and Pd/C catalyst and with red mercuric oxide. Both
methods led to the same calculated heat of hydrogenation (DELTAH(H))
of the azo group in hexane, -1 6.4 +/- 0.3 kcal/mol. This value is 10.
6 kcal/mol less exothermic than the DELTAH(H) of carbon-carbon double
bonds.
