Aa. Williams et al., PUMPS AS TURBINES AND INDUCTION-MOTORS AS GENERATORS FOR ENERGY RECOVERY IN WATER-SUPPLY SYSTEMS, Journal of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, 12(3), 1998, pp. 175-178
Pressure-reducing valves, which dissipate energy, are often used in wa
ter supply systems to regulate the down-stream pressure levels. If a r
everse running pumpset is installed alongside such a valve, most of th
e dissipated energy can be recovered. This paper describes a system of
this type which has recently been installed by North West Water, with
advice and specialized equipment supplied by the Nottingham Trent Uni
versity Micro-Hydro Group. The power produced by the energy-recovery s
ystem is used to run and monitor a remote potable-water dosing plant.
