Abstract
The transcription factors STAT5 mediates prolactin signals in mammary epithelial cells. The cDNA of bovine STAT5A was cloned, sequenced and compared to other species. The encoded protein proves to be > 95% homo logous to other mammals. We show that the STAT5A mRNA of the closely r elated ovine species contains an extended (by 130 nt) 5'-untranslated region, being encoded by an extra-exon, and accounts, possibly, for im proved translation efficiency.
