Abstract
The mechanism of pattern formation in excitable systems with active re covery is analyzed. The conditions for critical nucleation of macrosco pic structures with axial symmetry that have a finite number of rings were found. The number of the rings was shown to be determined by init ial perturbation properties and by the parameters of the system. A pos sible role of the mechanism in biology is discussed.
