Diphasic composites of piezoelectric and polymer materials have outsta
nding properties from device application point of view. These material
s offer a possibility of design and fabrication of the materials with
definite properties for specific application. Hence these are called s
mart materials. In this paper we present an outline of this field of r
esearch. The mixture rules of dielectric properties of these composite
s with 0-3 or 3-0.connectivity are presented. The modified equation ta
kes into account the local field interactions. Impedance and electrome
chanical coupling coefficients of these composites with 2-2 connectivi
ty for circular and rectangular geometry can be estimated. The piezoel
ectric constants of these materials exhibit Debye-type relaxations. Co
le-Cole plots can be drawn. A stress field applied to this material ca
n produce an overall piezoelectricity. Piezoelectric constant of these
materials can be related to the elastic and dielectric properties of
the component phases.
