This paper presents a case-study of automatic construction of a hypert
ext from a large full-text document. The document we used as the input
of the automatic authoring process is a well known textbook of Inform
ation Retrieval (IR). We explain in detail the steps performed to tran
sform the textbook into.a hyper-textbook. A hyper-textbook is the hype
rtextual equivalent of a textbook, in the same way as a hyperbook is t
he hypertextual equivalent of a book. A hyper-textbook is designed to
be used both as a self-instruction manual and as a reference source. M
oreover, it can be printed out into its textual form in total or only
partially for easy consultation without a computer. The hyper-textbook
is written in HTML and can be accessed and navigated using a common W
WW browser. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
