Irradiated CaSO4:Dy, a well known thermoluminescent material widely em
ployed for personal and environmental dosimetry, was studied by electr
on paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy in the 10(3)-10(7) Gy dose rang
e. A reliable dose assessment can be performed in that range by measur
ing the concentration of the radiation induced paramagnetic centers (S
O3)(-) and (VCa)(2-). (VCa)(2-) center was very stable over time while
(SO3)(-) center showed a dose dependent fading. Dose dependent sensit
ization effects in the yield of both centers were also observed up to
about 10(6) Gy.
