Objective. The aim of this study was to review the available literatur
e on dysmorphophobia/body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), to underscore tho
se areas requiring further study, and to stimulate clinicians and rese
archers to pay more attention to this often unrecognised problem. Meth
od. The review was carried out using relevant articles obtained throug
h the MEDLINE and PSYCHLIT databases. Results. BDD is a chronic, debil
itating illness that disrupts functioning at various levels. Recent st
udies have increased our knowledge, but a paucity of research into thi
s disorder remains. Conclusion. There is a need for more research into
many aspects of this disorder, including epidemiology, phenomenology,
nosology and treatment.
