Abstract
Motivation and results: An algorithm is described for the quick identi fication and evaluation of amino acid substitutions in multiple protei n sequence alignment. The strategy is based on the calculation of a re lative conservation index for an amino acid at each position of the al ignment. The algorithm is implemented in the computer-program POLINA ( Protein Oriented LINear Analysis) which provides a summary of analysis in a format suitable for import into a graphing program.
