Low density lipoproteins (LDL) are the major transporters of cholester
ol in human plasma. Their rapid uptake by specific tissue receptors no
rmally limits their atherogenic effects. The expression of these recep
tors is controlled by exogenous cholesterol and a variety of sterols w
hich act through transcription factors of the Sp-l and SREP (1 and 2)
families. The aim of this review is to report on the characterization,
role and mechanisms of action of the currently known transcription fa
ctors involved in LDL receptor synthesis.
