Abstract
Biphenylene and its derivatives were synthesized using the intramolecu lar coupling of benzoannelated zincacyclopentadiene intermediates prep ared from 2,2'-dilithiobiaryls with ZnCl2. The reaction proceeded smoo thly and selectively to give the desired biphenylenes in moderate to g ood yields. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
