Water-soluble resorcin[4]arene based cavitands were obtained in good y
ields by reaction of bromomethylcavitands with pyridine. Their solubil
ity was determined by conductometry. The behaviour in water depends on
the alkyl chain length; the methylcavitand does not aggregate, wherea
s the pentyl- and undecylcavitands do, as was shown by H-1 NMR spectro
scopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy. (C) 1998 Published by Else
