The current understanding of the decagonal quasicrystal is presented h
ere. Studies of the structure, morphology and the relationship of this
quasicrystal to other quasicrystals and related crystals are reviewed
. The production of very high-quality decagonal phase now makes it pos
sible to study its structure and properties more reliably. Accurate in
formation of the reciprocal lattice of decagonal phases with different
periodicity is now available. Defects in the decagonal phases are als
o being characterized. The study of the structural relationship of the
decagonal quasicrystal to other quasicrystals and crystalline phases
leads to a better understanding of the structure. The properties of th
is phase, which shows anisotropy owing to its one-dimensional periodic
ity, are of scientific interest and discussed here. (C) 1998 Elsevier
