Charging current observed in cyclic voltammetry with microelectrodes a
t fast sweep rate was investigated. Cyclic voltammograms were often di
storted owing to the charging current into the gap between the microel
ectrode and surrounding insulator. Based on a.transmission line model
for the equivalent circuits of the cell, an expression of charging cur
rent was derived. Validity of the model was supported by the agreement
between the computed current-potential curves and the experimental da
ta at various sweep rates. It is found that a slight leak can signific
antly affect the current response owing to its high circumference-to-a
rea ratio. if the increase in charging current due to the presence of
leak is not so large, such an electrode with small leakage can be used
for the kinetic analysis as far as we take the leakage into considera
tion.
