Abstract
A soil isolate of Aspergillus tamarii was an efficient producer of cel lulase-free xylanases over a large range of pH (4 to 9). At pH 9.0, xy lanase activities of at least 300 U/ml were produced. Although the opt imum pH of xylanase activity was 5.5-6.0, the enzyme exhibited high ac tivity and was stable under alkaline conditions. The A. tamarii xylana ses were active towards pulp at pH 9.0.
