Ion-beam analysis has been applied to a variety of problems involving
diffusion in heterogeneous materials. An energy loss technique has bee
n used to study both the diffusion of water and the surface segregatio
n of fluoropolymers in polymeric matrices. A scanning micro-beam techn
ique has been developed to allow water concentrations in hydrophilic p
olymers and cements to be measured together with associated solute ele
ments. It has also been applied to the diffusion of shampoo into hair.
