The Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) is a 3-MV Pelletr
on tandem mass spectrometer system. Since July 1996, extensive tests w
ith Al-26 detection were performed. Systematic investigations of repro
ducibility, transmission, overall efficiency etc. are necessary for a
new facility such as VERA in order to come up with reliable results. T
o this end several different Al-26 standards with an Al-26/Al-27 isoto
pic ratio between 5 x 10(-10) and 1 x 10(-12) were used. The results o
f these investigations revealed no systematic deviation beyond countin
g statistics. In order to determine the cross section for the Al-27(n,
2n)Al-26 reaction Al-metal samples with Al-26 produced from neutron ir
radiation were measured and compared with Al-26 standards. (C) 1998 El
