Objectives. This study examined the prevalance fate of and characteris
tics associated with cigar use. Methods. Data were derived from popula
tion-based telephone surveys of adults conducted in 22 North Americas
communities in 1989 and 1993 as part of the National Cancer Institute'
s Community Intervention Trial for Smoking Cessation. Results. Average
d across the 22 communities, the prevalance rate of regular cigar use
increased 133%; from 1989 to 1993. Regular cigar use increased in ever
y gender, age, rate, income, education; and smoking status category;.
Conclusion. These results confirm other data indicating that cigar use
is increasing.
