The fault kinematic analysis in the Ilgaz-Kursunlu basin reveals the e
volution of the regional tectonic regimes and of the states of stress
in the basin, since the Upper Miocene to present. The kinematic analys
is of faults affecting the Cenozoic and the substratum gives evidence
that this basin has been initiated within a NNE-trending extensional t
ectonic regime. Furthermore, the strike-slip phase is older than the o
pening of this basin, which seems to have been initiated by an overthr
ust episode which was active during the Upper Pontus filling [Plio-Ple
istocene (?)]. Moreover, a Pliocene NW-trending extension could accomm
odate a sinistral component of the displacement along the NAF.
