The objective of this study was the development of a breeding programm
e for the beef-cattle breed Limousin based on the case of the beef cat
tle herdbook Bonn (Fleischrinder-Herdbuch Bonn e.V.). For the calculat
ion of the cost-benefit analysis a reference situation was defined tak
ing the population structure, the economic and genetic parameters, the
biologic-technical coefficients as well as the method of performance
testing into account. Based on the results of the present investigatio
n the following suggestions and approaches regarding future breeding a
ctivities of the beef cattle herdbook Bonn can be derived, that the se
lection solely based on undirected self performance testing in-field (
weight at licensing and conformation mark) resulted in negative breedi
ng progress. Positive breeding progress was achieved through on statio
n performance testing, directed in-field performance testing (determin
ation of the body weight at 210 and 365 days of age and of the conform
ation mark) and the combination of directed in-field and on-station pe
rformance testing considering all available pedigree information.
