An experiment is described investigating the electronic deexcitation a
nd dissociation of CS2 molecules following ionization at the sulfur (2
p) shell. The S(L-23)-VV Auger spectrum measured at 0.3 eV resolution
has been decomposed into spin-orbit line doublets whereby CS22+ final
state energies and Auger transition intensities have been derived. Goo
d agreement of the energies with published results on spin-selective d
ouble charge transfer enables assignment of the observed levels to cal
culated states. Ion pairs from fragmentation following the Auger trans
ition have been detected and identified by time-of-flight spectroscopy
in coincidence with each other and with an energy-resolved Auger elec
tron. Four fragmentation channels have been observed. The dependence o
f their relative intensities on the Auger energy reveals the correlati
on between the energy of the molecular ion and its dissociative behavi
