The Guttmann Institute is a hospital specialised in the comprehensive
rehabilitation and medical/surgical treatment of persons suffering fro
m spinal cord injury or from other severe physical disabilities. It op
ened in Barcelona in 1965 and was the first hospital in Spain dedicate
d to the treatment of paraplegic and tetraplegic patients, and the one
which introduced into Spain the comprehensive approach to spinal cord
injury developed by Sir Ludwig Guttmann at the Stoke Mandeville Hospi
tal in the UK. The Guttmann Institute Foundation is a non-profit-makin
g foundation and its hospital, the Guttmann Institute, forms part of t
he Public Service Hospital Network. The Guttmann Institute has a wide-
ranging, multi-disciplinary group of staff made up of specialised prof
essionals; and it has the appropriate resources for the provision of t
horough medical attention from a technical, scientific and human point
of view.
